The Black Cloud by Fred Hoyle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This story is hard science fiction at its best. I thoroughly enjoyed this book not only for its exploration of plausible yet utterly fantastic ideas, but also for the story and characterization as well. Like all hard scifi, the main focus is on the description of something amazing yet believable -- in this case the existence of the black cloud and how it affects those on Earth -- yet unlike most stories in this genre, there was also quite a bit of political commentary as well.
If you enjoy both science and scifi, you'll adore this as one of the classic hard scifi novels. It's definitely worth a read.
