It's good that you're interested in this stuff and trying to learn more!

Also, that expression you have IS Graham's number. It isn't an upper or lower bound for it. It just so happens that Graham's number served as an upper bound for a particular problem in Ramsey theory. I guess this error came about when I ...Thanks. (c:

I guess this error came about when I compared estimates of BB() against TREE(). The fact that BB(12) is only around 3^^^^3 while TREE(3) is already unimaginably huge shows that, at least for low inputs, TREE() gives higher outputs than BB(). But, as you correctly point out, BB() overtakes TREE() at some point and just keeps growing faster and faster.

Unfortunately, I can see no reference which even estimates at which point BB() would overtake TREE(). Clearly TREE(3) > BB(12), but what about TREE(100)? TREE(3^^^^3)? For all we know, TREE() is still producing larger outputs at this point than BB() is for the same input. So even if BB() does definitely grow faster, maybe TREE() (or another fast growing function) is better at giving higher outputs for any input I can think to put inside it.

But maybe I'm making another error here by thinking on these lines. Even if I am, it's still interesting to think about.Eric Herbosohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07888413471076959781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11367545.post-38388025190815080042012-12-07T22:11:21.381-05:002012-12-07T22:11:21.381-05:00I had trouble finding information online, but if i...I had trouble finding information online, but if it is correct that TREE(x) is a computable function, that would indeed mean that the busy-beaver function grows faster than it.
The reason is that BB grows asymptotically faster than any computable function. This is a mind-boggling fact for me, but it's true. Don't sweat the errors too much, as it's a good learning experience.
